Crosstabulations as graphics

Survey Analysis (Scotland) meeting
In any market or social research project one of the most time consuming elements of the project is working out what the data is "actually telling you" about the population of interest. Traditionally you would receive tables of crosstabs, where different questions in the questionnaire are broken down by crossbreak items like gender, age, area, company size, sic code etc. You would then go through these tables of crosstabulations looking for results that were significantly above or below the average.

Survey Analysis (UK) try to eliminate this time consuming and often tedious process by providing crosstabulation results as charts. This means that you can "see at a glance" which groups are particularly satisfied or dissatisfied with an area or item. If it is appropriate the items will also be sorted in order of satisfaction. There is then no possibility of missing items of importance and eliminates the large amount of time that can be spent looking for them. We do not provide the charts as an alternative but as well as the tables.

An example of crosstabulations with graphics can be seen below. First a standard crosstabulation table showing how satisfaction with the area in which you live broken down by gender, age, area, income and ethnic group. The chart below the table shows what is also provided by Survey Analysis (UK)

What Survey Analysis (UK) supplies in addition to crosstab tables

The chart below the table enables far easier interpretation of the results. The summarisation of the very good and good results, means that you can "see at a glance" which particular groups of respondents are most and least satisfied.

We provide these type of charts at three different levels. The first level is at the question level which is shown above. The second level is for groups of questions or sections of a questionnaire. For example if the first page of the questionnaire has 20 questions about satisfaction with a Council services and facilities there would also be a chart summarising satisfaction for all 20 questions combined as well as the individual questions. And also a third level chart which summarises satisfaction for all questions in the survey were satisfaction or agreement where indicated. The chart below is an example of a second level chart.

The chart below is an example of a third level chart were all questions on the questionnaire, which indicated satsifaction/dissatisfaction in some way. The scale may be "very good - very bad", "very satisfied - very dissatisfed", "Yes - No" or any of a range of other possibilities. The bar in this chart is labelled satisfaction as satisfaction has been indicated rather than dissatisfaction.
